How Long Will it Take to Get Social Security Benefits

One of the most common questions I get from clients is: How long does it take to get social security benefits?

The answer depends on what stage of the disability application and appeal process your case is in. Here’s a general timeline:

  • Initial Application: After you file your Social Security disability application (online or by phone), it usually takes 9-12 months to receive a decision.
  • Request for Consideration: If your initial claim is denied, you must file an appeal within 60 days. This reconsideration process takes about 4 to 6 months for a second decision.
  • Request for a Hearing: If reconsideration is denied, you have another 60 days to request a hearing before an Administrative Law judge. It typically takes 6 months or longer to get a hearing date.

Can you speed up the process?
While waiting for a decision can be frustrating, there are ways to improve your chances of approval at the initial application or reconsideration stage. Having strong medical evidence and correctly completing your application can make a big difference.
